DNS Server

The DNS Server allows use of hostnames on the local network (LAN). Computers can be reached using their names instead of IP numbers - the DNS server takes care of resolving names into numbers.

NOTE! Press "Save" after your settings!

Enable DNS Server - Activate the DNS server in your unit allowing it to answer to DNS requests from your LAN.

Domain - Name of the network on your LAN. All inside interfaces will be on this domain. Entries without domain specified in the Hostname table are assumed to be in this domain.

Advanced:
(Only for the advanced user!)
Don't recurse for clients - The DNS server resolves requests it knows the answer to. Otherwise it asks the Operator's DNS server before answering back to the requesting client. This is called recursion.
If you know you have equipment that can do recursive DNS lookups on its own (can ask second DNS server if first one fails to resolve), enter its IP address here. By allowing clients to do recursion on their own, overall network performance is increased.
Multiple IP addresses can be entered, separated by comma. Value 0.0.0.0 has special meaning "don't perform any recursive lookups for any client".

Collect DHCP names - The DHCP server will automatically fill in the Hostname table with all names found. Recommended.

DHCP distribute server - The DHCP server will specify this server as primary DNS server to all DHCP clients. Recommended.

Hostname Table

This table lists all hostnames the DNS server recognises, and the IP address they resolve to.
Fill in the name and IP address of all PCs on your LAN, to allow the DNS server to recognise them.

Hostname - Name of a PC. Only one name!
IP Address - IP address of that PC. Only one IP address!

Each host are only allowed one IP address. Multiple IP addresses are not supported.
You can enter multiple names for the same IP Address by writing several entries with different hostnames but same IP Address.
Hostnames without domain are assumed to be in the DNS server's domain.
You can also enter hostnames with domain (e.g. www.anysite.com) to make the DNS server resolve them without the need of contacting external DNS servers.
To remove an entry delete its Hostname or IP Address field and click Save.
To enter more rows than available click Save, and new empty rows will be added.
