Bullish on SIP and Triple Play
Founded in 1982 in Stockholm, Sweden, Intertex Data AB has been working with telecommunication and security products in close cooperation with large carriers and ISPs. During the 1990’s Intertex was one of Europe’s most successful players in the dial-up modem market, mainly OEMing their products to European carriers and major ISPs. In 1998, Intertex started developing the current line of products, called the IX66, a firewall and router for the small-office/home-office (SOHO) market that has integrated support for the SIP protocol through its built-in SIP Proxy and Registrar.
Howard Kendall is Director of Business Development at Intertex, and I had the opportunity to catch up with Kendall ahead of his company’s participation at the upcoming ITEXPO.

Intertex markets firewall/routers and IADs to the residential and SMB sectors, and they have a comprehensive range, but at VON Europe in Stockholm the company introduced an innovative IAD that enables a so-called multimedia LAN. Home networks normally start with a wireless access point and some kind of IAD, so there’s a NAT/firewall issue, particularly when running VoIP. Add IPTV, which comes in on a separate cable and has no connectivity to the PCs, and you have a second LAN.

On the other hand, IP technology and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) allow for much more than replication of old telephony. Soon, live person-to-person IP communication, including new and extended services and global IP-to-IP connectivity must be offered. The success of Skype has killed several myths in this area, but future global telephony systems must be based on open standards (SIP), allow for a wide range of applications, and be extendable.
